Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a gripping new thriller that pits homicide detective Eve Dallas against a conspiracy of exploitation and evil…

New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed。 Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan。 Mina was the more daring of the two—but they’d been equally desperate。

Unfortunately, they didn’t get away fast enough。 Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt。 Eve Dallas looks over the scene。

Mina’s expensive, elegant clothes and beauty products convince Dallas that she was being groomed, literally and figuratively, for sex trafficking—and that whoever is investing in this high-overhead operation expects windfall profits。 Her billionaire husband, Roarke, may be able to help, considering his ties to the city’s ultra-rich。 But Roarke is also worried about the effect this case is having on Dallas, as it brings a rage to the surface she can barely control。 No matter what, she must keep her head clear--because above all, she is desperate for justice and to take down those who prey on and torment the innocent。

Riveting read。 One of the best in the series。

Eric Hunter

This was an unusual Eve Dallas book since there was really only one murder for Eve to investigate。 The subject matter was distasteful, and probably warrants a Trigger Warning, though。

DallasAnother great read。 JD Robb never disappoints。 Fast paced and thrilling。 And with the usual gang to provide emotional connection。

Frances Cobble

As good as ever。 Her books are always good。 I have read all of them。 Looking forward to the next one。 It could do with less electronics and more police work。

Brenda Robinson

She never fails to make me enjoy reading。

J。 D。 Robb has done it again。 Another excellent crime thriller with our beloved Lieutenant and Irish gazillionaire - this one exposing a huge trafficking ring that hits close to home for Eve, but is handled sensitively as always and shows how strong she is as a woman and cop。 It was a very intriguing mystery, and although we knew the culprit from fairly early on, it was wonderful to see the investigation come together。 I always love dipping into Roarke and Eve's world - it feels like reuniting w J。 D。 Robb has done it again。 Another excellent crime thriller with our beloved Lieutenant and Irish gazillionaire - this one exposing a huge trafficking ring that hits close to home for Eve, but is handled sensitively as always and shows how strong she is as a woman and cop。 It was a very intriguing mystery, and although we knew the culprit from fairly early on, it was wonderful to see the investigation come together。 I always love dipping into Roarke and Eve's world - it feels like reuniting with old friends, especially when we have glimpses of the smaller characters like Crack and Tiko that make the world come alive again。 I adore the character quirks we see in full force, such as Eve's ability to question or botch cliched sayings。 I did find myself wishing there was a little more personal relationship development in terms of Roarke and Eve, though it was nice to see some movement in terms of promotions within the department etc。Mega thanks to Netgalley for an early copy of this book! 。。。more

This was a great story。 Eve has to face some of her past memories because of the way they seem to apply to this crime。 The young dead victim, Mina, is so well developed in the short time she’s part of the story but then comes Dorian and you just feel for her and then you admire her gumption。 Loved the story and the work the characters employed to take down the bad guys。 Loved the sass of the victim’s showing that they weren’t beaten。 Great read。

Another gripping addition to one of my favorite series。 This case hit close to home with Dallas, but with Roarke's unfailing support, she powers through。 It is an egregious crime being investigated and Dallas handled it (with Roarke's expert help) with her usual meticulous, brilliant way。 The repartee between Dallas and Peabody adds just the right humor and breaks up the seriousness of this particularly ugly case。 The rest of the gang all puts in appearances。 Mavis shows a fierce side, along wit Another gripping addition to one of my favorite series。 This case hit close to home with Dallas, but with Roarke's unfailing support, she powers through。 It is an egregious crime being investigated and Dallas handled it (with Roarke's expert help) with her usual meticulous, brilliant way。 The repartee between Dallas and Peabody adds just the right humor and breaks up the seriousness of this particularly ugly case。 The rest of the gang all puts in appearances。 Mavis shows a fierce side, along with her outrageous, delightful persona。 As always, it was great being back with old friends。 I am already craving my next Dallas and Roarke fix。 ;) 。。。more

Excellent read!!I live Eve Dallas and J。D。 Robb!! The plots are solid and the characters great! Ms。 Robb always give the reader a lot of entertainment and fun!! While the story is based on a terrible topic by the end of the book you will have satisfaction just like it was a real thing!!

It's so nice to see roarke and Eve's relationship develop and Eve's interaction with all the other characters。But compared to the other books I didn't like it as much。Maybe it's because I waited so long and when it eventually came I wasn't really into it。 It's so nice to see roarke and Eve's relationship develop and Eve's interaction with all the other characters。But compared to the other books I didn't like it as much。Maybe it's because I waited so long and when it eventually came I wasn't really into it。 。。。more

As much as the plot is structured in such a way that longtime readers can connect it to Dallas' past without problems and thus develop a whole set of expectations with respect to a more intimate development in the relationship between her and Roarke, what unfortunately remains, at the end of the book, is a murder mystery, nice and I have no problem to admit it, but still just a murder mystery。 Nothing to remind me one of those books of the past, in which the mysteries to be solved were just a si As much as the plot is structured in such a way that longtime readers can connect it to Dallas' past without problems and thus develop a whole set of expectations with respect to a more intimate development in the relationship between her and Roarke, what unfortunately remains, at the end of the book, is a murder mystery, nice and I have no problem to admit it, but still just a murder mystery。 Nothing to remind me one of those books of the past, in which the mysteries to be solved were just a side dish to the relationship of the two main characters。。。。 Too bad, but I won't stop hoping, even after book #55。Per quanto la trama sia strutturata in modo che i lettori di lunga data possano collegarla al passato di Dallas senza problemi e sviluppare quindi tutta una serie di aspettative rispetto ad un'evoluzione piú intima nella relazione tra lei e Roarke, quello che purtroppo resta alla fine del libro, é un giallo, carino non ho problemi ad ammetterlo, ma sempre e solo un giallo。 Niente che possa ricordare quei libri passati nella serie, nei quali i misteri da risolvere erano solo un contorno alla relazione dei due protagonisti principali。 Peccato, ma non smetto di sperare, nemmeno dopo il 55° libro。 。。。more

Wow! Another solid entry in the In Death series。 Mina Cabot’s body is found impaled with a piece of wood。 As Eve investigates, it becomes clear she was being groomed for the sex trade, and the other blood found on the body was planted。 The planted blood belongs to another young girl, Dorian Gregg。 Both girls were thirteen。 As Eve investigates, she brings in more people to help, and does her normal in-depth searches using the clues she uncovers。 Peabody, Roarke, McNab, Feeney, Nadine, Callendar, Wow! Had me from page 1!!Didn't want to put this one down! I felt the fear of these young victims and Eve's frustration at trying to get justice for the victim who paid the ultimate price for trying to obtain her freedom。 Had me from page 1!!Didn't want to put this one down! I don’t know how she does it。 How these still hit so well after 55 books, I have no idea。 But lord did this one hit hard。 So good。 I essentially finished it in one sitting and it’s now midnight and I have to work tomorrow。 But such a good entry in this series。

Excellent read! Eve kicks a$$ in the latest book, as usual。 The subject of this book is not pleasant but the way Eve and the team deal with it makes it a satisfying read。

Another home run。。。I love the 'in death' series penned by J。D。 Robb。 I have read them since the very first one was published。 These books do not disappoint and each one is different to the point of my looking forward to the next。 I recommend Desperation in Death。 You'll love it。 Another home run。。。I love the 'in death' series penned by J。D。 Robb。 I have read them since the very first one was published。 These books do not disappoint and each one is different to the point of my looking forward to the next。 I recommend Desperation in Death。 You'll love it。 。。。more

TW: child p*rn, rape, abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, mental of children and adults, sex trafficking, violence, dead kid, suicide。This was a great new In Death book。 I cried and laughed and the ending was amazing。But please mind the trigger warnings。 Eve is dealing with a large child sex trafficking ring and the themes are disturbing。

4 stars。I enjoyed this。 So glad that Eve and Roarke are getting the hang of supporting each other even though the case brought out their protective instincts for each other。 In previous books, they were more defensive, but there's now a much deeper understanding of each other's demons and how to support each other in dealing with them。 I liked the re-introduction of Sebastian。 Having just listened to the In Death Podcast interview with Susan Ericksen, I can't help but wonder whether she's going 4 stars。I enjoyed this。 So glad that Eve and Roarke are getting the hang of supporting each other even though the case brought out their protective instincts for each other。 In previous books, they were more defensive, but there's now a much deeper understanding of each other's demons and how to support each other in dealing with them。 I liked the re-introduction of Sebastian。 Having just listened to the In Death Podcast interview with Susan Ericksen, I can't help but wonder whether she's going to be adding another voice snippet to her collection。 As least I don't think his voice is as gravelly as Trina or Whitney。 :)I'm so looking forward to the cookout and the housewarming。 Let's hope they happen soon。 。。。more

Another exceptional chapter in this ongoing story about Eve Dallas。 This time she has to face her childhood demons to get the job done。

Excellent, as alwaysI have read every book in this series, most more than once。 Every story draws me in and keeps me mesmerized until the end。 Eve Dallas and Roarke and the rest of the amazing characters never grow stale for me。 This particular case, involving the trafficking of young girls, strikes particularly hard for Eve, with her own history。 The meticulous police work which solves the puzzle is fascinating in itself, and the conclusion is extremely satisfying。
